On June 23rd, Bowser Subaru personally delivered these items to UPMC Hillman Cancer Center. These blankets, patient care kits, and messages of hope provide warmth and comfort to patients in treatment. The love and support shared through this cherished partnership means a lot to everyone involved! This year, Bowser Subaru also opted to support the LLS Urgent Need Program, which will provide blood cancer patients with financial relief to help offset non-medical costs associated with treatment, such as transportation, food, housing, utilities, etc. Thank you for your commitment to supporting your community as well as the LLS mission to create a world without blood cancer and improve the quality of life for patients and their families!

Kittens in the Engine: A Monday Morning Rescue by Bowser Subaru - Mike Z.

On the chilly morning of Monday, April 28th, a Subaru owner from Clairton called Bowser Subaru with an unusual concern: they kept hearing cat meows coming from their vehicle parked in the driveway. The call reached Service Manager Mike Zuro, who immediately took the matter seriously. Recognizing that time was of the essence, Mike and service technician Rob quickly set out to the customer's nearby home. What they discovered was heartwarming—and a little heartbreaking. Two tiny kittens had taken refuge under the engine covers of the Subaru, likely drawn in by the lingering warmth after a cold weekend. For over an hour, Mike and Rob worked patiently and carefully, trying to figure out the safest way to free the kittens without harming them or damaging the vehicle. Their determination paid off—both kittens were rescued, scared but unharmed. But the story didn’t end there. As the team looked around, they spotted the kittens’ mother a few houses down, lounging near a neighbor’s porch. Reuniting the family became the final—and most rewarding—step in the morning’s unexpected mission. Thanks to the compassion and quick thinking of Mike and Rob, a cold and potentially dangerous situation turned into a warm and memorable rescue. Just another reason why at Bowser Subaru, love truly is what makes a Subaru, a Subaru.

Rags to Riches: Shakira (Mia) - Katelynn J.

One of our favorite success stories at Wayward Whiskers is that of a cat named Shakira. This fluffy, little diva came to us under some extremely urgent circumstances. On a hot summer day, Shakira was found locked inside of a car, all alone. Her owner had recently been arrested and Shakira was left to fend for herself. We later found out that for months, poor Shakira was LIVING inside this small car with her former owner. Obviously we took her in, and surprisingly Shakira was in good health despite her living circumstances. Although Shakira was in good health, she seemed to be shy of humans and especially afraid of other cats. Over a course year, volunteers earned Shakira’s trust. Everyone at the rescue grew to love her and her many different drama queen antics. From her many coos from her cage, to her little peculiar leg kicks, we just knew we had to find the perfect home for her- especially because she wasn't very fond of other cats. After many meet and greets with potential adopters that just didn't work out, a woman, who had recently lost her dearest feline friend, came into our rescue’s cat cafe, Cattfeinated Cat Cafe, searching for a new companion. It was love at first sight. She immediately knew Shakira was the one for her and couldn’t wait to bring her home. Now known as Mia, she is living her absolute best life as an only cat, spoiled rotten and getting the love and attention she deserves. Every day is now full of endless love, pampering, and treats for her and we wouldn't want it any other way! One might even say, it’s the perfect rags to riches story for this feline princess. Through Bowser Subaru and the Subaru Love Pets® initiative, our rescue was able to rescue and provide Shakira a safe, loving place for her to trust and thrive to get her to her forever home. Due to programs like this, our rescue organization can help so many animals in our community through adoption and spay/neuter services.

Bowser Subaru Helps Local Cancer Patients - Heather P.

Bowser Subaru's partnership with the Dr. Marks Blood Cancer Research Fund allows for continued research to help blood cancer patients here in Pittsburgh and beyond. Patients like Cathy Doyle. On any given day, you will find Cathy Doyle happily playing with and caring for her four grandchildren. Her entire family, which includes her two children, their spouses, her husband and her nine brothers and sisters are extremely close and most live nearby right in the Pittsburgh region. That family rallied around Cathy when four years ago, she was fighting for her life following a diagnosis of Acute Myeloid Leukemia (AML), a rare type of blood cancer that forms in the bone marrow and rapidly progresses. Unfortunately, Cathy was no stranger to cancer – she had already overcome ovarian cancer a few years earlier. With this diagnosis, her Hillman oncologist/hematologist, Dr. Annie Im, recommended she undergo an allogeneic stem team cell transplant, which requires a stem cell donor who is a close genetic match. Patients sometimes struggle to find donors, but since Cathy came from a large family, she had choices. Every single one of her family members volunteered to be tested and two brothers were 100% matches. It was her younger brother, Michael Ragan, who was a full match and became her donor. Ragan never hesitated. The transplant was not easy, but it worked. Cathy spent a month at UPMC Shadyside receiving high doses of chemotherapy to kill the cancer cells and another month following a stem cell transplant, which replaces the destroyed stem cells in the bone marrow. Despite the stem cell match, stem cell transplants can also have complications, one of which is called graft-versus-host disease or GVHD. GVHD occurs when the donor’s T cells inadvertently attack the patient’s healthy cells. It can be mild, moderate, or severe – and in some cases, life-threatening. Preventing GVHD is a focus of UPMC Hillman Cancer Center researcher, Dr. Warren Shlomchik, and Cathy was the first person at UPMC selected for his clinical trial. The initial trial was so successful in reducing the risk of GVHD and in preventing cancer recurrence, that the trial has been expanded to a multicenter, national trial.Cathy frequently calls herself blessed and lucky. She does not complain. She believes she was blessed to find Dr. Im and her oncology team, to be the first person in a new clinical trial at UPMC Hillman Cancer Center, and blessed for the wonderful nurses and a loving family who cared for her. “She is one of a kind,” Dr. Im said. “She never once said ‘why me?’ She approached every treatment with a positive, faithful, hopeful, and gracious spirit.” Today, Cathy helps other patients by talking with them about her clinical trial and her experiences. She keeps in contact with many of the nurses who cared for her and she is enjoying her life while running after her four grandchildren.
